Fill Types for Down Comforters

Picking a down comforter is an important decision because everyone has a preference about the weight and feel of the cover they want to sleep under, and oftentimes their preference can vary depending on the season.  Many people are also concerned with the type of filling because of a preference of feathers due to allergens to the feather, color of the feather, or the price point of the comforter.  Common comforter fill types include duck down and goose down and synthetic fill down.  There are endless options of comforters, and this can leave you overwhelmed when trying to make a decision of what to buy.  Let’s review your options:

Goose Down:  Goose down is considered the traditional comforter fill type and is generally less costly than the duck downs.  The filling consists of the small feathers that keep the goose warm.

Duck Down:  The duck fill down is the less costly alternative to the goose fill down.  Nonetheless, it is believed to provide similar warmth and comfort to the goose fill down.  Duck downs have 87% of the insulating power that goose down’s do. So this may be a better option for those who like to sleep with lighter weight on them.

Synthetic Fill:  Synthetic fill comforters are also called Alternative down.  This is another type of down that is made of synthetic fill fibers such as polyester, cotton, or wool.  This is not considered a down comforter but it is an alternative to the down comforters because it provides a hypoallergenic option.  Therefore, folks who are allergic to feathers would be smart to consider a synthetic fill comforter.  Sometimes synthetic fill comforters feel a bit heavier, so you must consider the weight as well.

Both Goose and Duck down work great, and there are only subtle differences.  They both provide great insulation and are similarly structured.  Both goose and duck maintain warmth for many years.  Both are available in white and mottled grey.  So, either goose or duck is a great option for the buyer.  Alternatively, synthetic comforters work equally as good.  So, whatever you choose to buy, it is probably most important to consider the quality, the weight, and whether you have an allergy.

Also, and most importantly, to maintain the life of the comforter, you may want to consider adding a comforter cover from Plush Nights Bedding to cover your comforter to extend its life.  Check out some of these amazing comforter cover options:
